EJI provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons.

They challenge the death penalty and excessive punishment and they provide re-entry assistance to formerly incarcerated people.

EJI produces groundbreaking reports, an award-winning calendar, and short films that explore our nation's history of racial injustice.

EJI developed and operates the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice

as part of their national effort to create new spaces, markers, and memorials that address the legacy of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation, which shapes many issues today.

Their work includes: Criminal Justice Reform, Racial Justice, Anti-Poverty Resources, and Public Education.

The opposite of poverty is not wealth. The opposite of poverty is justice.

The United States incarcerates its citizens more than any other country.

Mass incarceration disproportionately impacts the poor and people of color and does not make us safer.

EJI is working to end our misguided reliance on over-incarceration. We are haunted by our history of racial injustice in America because we don't talk about it.

Ending mass incarceration and achieving equality, justice, and fairness for all Americans starts with learning and sharing the truth about our past. We must truthfully confront our history of racial injustice before we can repair its painful legacy."
